I am grateful to YGB and the SHE project for providing life-changing opportunities for girls and for impacting the whole community in powerfully positive ways.
Pallabi grew up in a small village with both parents and a sister. Her father suffered from alcohol use disorder and routinely became violently abusive when he was intoxicated – which was usually. The physical and verbal abuse at home eventually became unbearable, and Pallabi turned to YGB’s NGO partner NISHTHA and their local group for support. They immediately intervened, and over time, Pallabi, her mother and her sister learned strategies and skills that made them feel empowered and gave them the courage to stand up to her father.
NISHTHA’s local group took Pallabi’s father to group therapy for alcoholism and support groups for fathers, leading to significant improvements in his outlook and behavior. His confidence was bolstered as he learned healthier ways to manage his feelings and interact with his family.
Pallabi has completed her education and is now working for SBI, Nepal Gaunge branch (PSC) and earning a salary that affords her independence and help for her family. She feels proud of her father for continuing to work on his challenges and make progress toward his goals.
