Girls are essential agents of change in breaking the poverty and discrimination cycle. YGB is truly grateful to have the support of our first corporate sponsor Pure International, headquartered in Hong Kong, through its Corporate Responsibility Program (CSR) initiative, commit to fund higher education for ten underprivileged girls in the backward villages of Parganas of West Bengal with a five-year commitment to YGB's SHE (Scholarship for Higher Education) program.

Early marriage is quite common here and after a series of motivational talks and negotiations with the parents, these ten girls were permitted to enter YGB’s SHE (Scholarship for Higher Education) program three years ago. All the girls are attending college today. Our biggest achievement has been to ensure that all ten girls, have received support in continuing their education without the risk of dropping out of school or being forced into marriage. One of the girls, Monisha Pramanik, is pursuing Science, which is a matter of high respect, while the other nine girls are pursuing the Arts.

All the girls are leaders of Kishori Vahini (adolescent girls group) under which they provide leadership to another ten to fifteen girls each. The social workers conduct regular meetings with the adolescents girls where they discuss gender biased discrimination, early marriage, drop-out prevention, and reproductive health and more importantly they draw up strategies to prevent it's continuation.

By investing in the under appreciated potential of girls like the beneficiaries of SHE through education, life skill training, and by delaying child marriage, multiple issues such as maternal mortality, child survival, gender-based violence and HIV can also be resolved and the cycle of poverty can be broken, not to mention the importance of nurturing self-worth and confidence in themselves.
