This year, YGB’s five-year program SHE (Scholarship for Higher Education) is funding 100 under privileged teen girls for them to continue their higher education in West Bengal. These students are not only diligent about their studies but also have become passionate advocates to change their abusive tradition against young girls. YGB partner, local non-governmental organization NISHTHA,  guide these girls and women in conducting street theaters on the ill-effects of an early marriage on a young girl’s life. The group also discuss whether girls’ lives are valuable and how this tradition of an early marriage can be changed.

In Panchpara village the YGB funded teen girls heard that one of their peers was being forced to marry. The girl was a minor. These teen girls decided to go to their friend's house to talk to her parents. When her furious father threatened the girls they then approached the women’s group, which is a YGB’s micro loan group. Together, the girls and women returned to the girl's house. Feeling the pressure, her father tried to explain that all the preparations were already done. Stopping the marriage was not be possible.

But, the girls and the women’s group were quite determined and conducted a series of meetings with her father, explaining the ill-effects of early marriage not to mention that it is also illegal and a punishable offense.

It took three days of convincing. In the end the girl’s and women's perseverance caused the girl’s father to cancel the marriage. All of them are very happy that their friend is continuing her education with them.

The SHE (Scholarship for Higher Education) project's biggest achievement has been to ensure that all the girls are continuing their education. For the cost of one yoga class, you can change a life!
